SIEM REAP WELCOMES ITS FIRST COMMERCIAL/PASSENGER FLIGHT SINCE 2020

The sudden and drastic stop of international travel to Siem Reap (a city almost entirely reliant on the tourism industry) in early 2020, has been devastating for the local community. Thousands of people lost their jobs, and many went hungry. After nearly two brutal years, a glimmer of hope appeared in the sky on the morning of December 17th, 2021. Singapore Airlines - Flight 164 (the first official commercial/passenger flight to land here since the outbreak of this crushing scenario) touched down on the runway of Siem Reap International Airport - triggering profound emotions and joy amongst a cheering crowd that welcomed travellers as they exited the airport. Some gathered to pick up their friends and guests, while others like Craig Dodge, a managing director with Phare, the Cambodian Circus, showed up without personally knowing any of the 67 passengers on board. Why? Because this was a highly significant moment - one that has given a battered community with the hope of a brighter future. Here’s a little video that whipped up to honour the moment. #SiemReap is open!
